If the numbers don't lie, chances are that if you are reading this you either already use Facebook or MySpace. Am I right? If so, you are half-way there. If you are not using social networks, sign up now!

Over 90% of new jobs these days are filled via referrals from within. The old saying, "It's not what you know, but who you know" has never been truer. Social networks replace the age-old Rolodex with a permanent index of all of your current, and long-forgotten connections.

Facebook and MySpace are easy ways to reconnect with old college and high school friends. Chances are one of your friends already works within your dream job. Use your network to its full advantage by asking for recommendations before you apply.

LinkedIn is another great resource for your job search. LinkedIn is focused more on professional networking. Almost everyone on there are there to share business contacts, job leads, and client details. LinkedIn automatically arranges your profile in resume form and pushes it straight to the top of Google's index. Past employers can post recommendations onto your page for all to see, giving your resume that extra edge over the competition.

Of course, there are tons of other social networking sites such as Twitter and Spoke. Use the ones best suited for your field, and use them often.

It is important though to use these networks responsibly. Many people have had their careers seriously damaged or destroyed by posting compromising photos, stories, or incriminating evidence onto their social networks. Be very careful with what you choose to post.

As with anything, these tools are a great value when used correctly.

Contact us today for more information on using social networks in your job search!

When going on an interview, have you ever wished to yourself that you had all of the answers beforehand? Sure! We all have. Without knowing someone on the inside, where can you find them though?

You arrive on your big day dressed in your nice business suit, resume in hand. You go over and over all of the technical questions/answers in your head only to find out that the team interviewing you asks something like "How would you move a mountain?" How could anyone expect a question like that

Even though you weren't prepared for these questions, you manage to provide answers that make the team happy and are now offered the job. The worst part now begins... Salary negotiations. How much should you ask for? Should you low ball it to get into the door? Should you shoot for the moon? Without some sort of idea on what the position SHOULD pay, you are now at the mercy of the company's HR department (who would like to pay you the least possible amount).

Wouldn't it be nice to know what your co-workers are making beforehand? Wouldn't it be nice to know what a typical interview is like beforehand?

Thanks to the Internet, now you can!

glassdoor.com is a new website where employees can enter their current salary + bonuses anonymously along with the associated job title for their company. Users can search the site to find actual real-time information.

glassdoor.com also lists people's experiences during the job interview, preparing you for those unexpected questions that you might receive.

Before your next interview, you owe it to yourself to spend a few minutes on glassdoor.com. Those few minutes could make thousands of dollars per year of a difference!

I'm in the early stages of planning our first Job Search Expo.  If you are a company having difficulty finding the right people, an employee who needs help with their networking skills, or a speaker looking for some exposure, please contact me with your availability.  Also, I am looking for a venue.   I am thinking of holding the event around Clearwater since it's easy to get to for people on "both sides of the pond".

Check back often for more details!

Check it out, and feel free to apply if you have what it takes!
